He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts in 1911. His best-known works include: "Gasse in Genua" ("Lane in Genoa"; 1872), "Stadtgraben in Esslingen" ("Moat in Esslingen"; 1879), "Mondnacht am Neckar" ("Moonlit Night on the Neckar"; 1883).〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.orden-pourlemerite.de/mitglieder/gustav-schoenleber?m=3&u=5 )〕 ==Life== He was educated in Stuttgart Polytechnic and under the artist Adolf Heinrich Lier in Munich, then travelled in Italy, the Netherlands, northern Germany, northwest France, and England. In the last, he saw works by John Constable and J. M. W. Turner. He exhibited in Vienna and Munich, followed by shows in Stuttgart, Berlin and Rome.〔 From 1880 to 1910 he worked at the art school in Karlsruhe, where his students included Alfred Helberger, Hans von Volkmann, Karl Scherbring, Max Roman, and Paul von Ravelstein. In the early 1900s his art was promoted by the Imperial German government for its depictions of the German homeland, which were considered more appropriate for international display than that of Expressionists like Max Beckmann.
